WOOD VINEGAR (PYROLIGNEOUS ACID)

wood vinegar logo

What it is

Wood Vinegar - also known as pyroligneous acid, liquid smoke, or wood distillate - is the aqueous condensate produced during the controlled pyrolysis (carbonization) of lignocellulosic biomass.

It is obtained when wood smoke is cooled and condensed, then aged and refined through sedimentation.

According to the comprehensive review by Ouattara et al., wood vinegar consists of 80–90% water and more than 200 natural water-soluble organic compounds, making it a chemically complex, biologically active solution

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION

More Than 200 Organic Compounds

Wood vinegar is not “just acetic acid.” It is a micro-emulsion composed of multiple interacting chemical families derived from cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and extractives during thermal decomposition.

The following major Chemical Families Identified:

Organic Acids (Dominant Functional Group)

Primary contributors to low pH (2–4). Examples identified in GC-MS analyses

  • Acetic acid (often 20%+ relative content)
  • Formic acid
  • Propionic acid
  • Butyric acid
  • 2-Hydroxy-2-methylpropanoic acid
  • 2-Oxo-n-valeric acid

Across studies, more than 200 water-soluble organic compounds are reported, many of which are organic acids and acid derivatives. These acids are responsible for:

  • Antimicrobial action
  • Weed suppression
  • pH modulation
  • Enhanced nutrient solubilization

Carbonyl Compounds (Aldehydes & Ketones)

Identified compounds include

  • 2-Butanone
  • Cyclopentanone
  • Acetoin
  • Vanillin
  • Furancarboxaldehydes

These contribute to:

  • Antimicrobial action
  • Plant signaling responses
  • Aroma and volatile bioactivity

Nitrogen Compounds

Example:

  • Pyridine

Phenols & Phenolic Derivatives (High Bioactivity Fraction)

Phenols often represent one of the largest active fractions (e.g., > 40% relative content in some analyses)

Examples include:

  • Phenol
  • o-Cresol
  • Guaiacol
  • Catechol
  • Dimethylphenols
  • Methoxyphenols
  • Vanillin derivatives

These compounds are responsible for:

  • Antifungal effects
  • Antibacterial action
  • Insecticidal properties
  • Antioxidant activity

Phenolic content strongly correlates with antimicrobial performance

Furan Derivatives

Examples

  • Tetrahydro-2-furanol
  • Methoxytetrahydrofuran
  • 1-(2-Furanyl)-ethanone

These compounds originate from carbohydrate degradation and are linked to biological activity against microbes.

Esters & Lactones

Examples

  • Ethyl acetate
  • Gamma-butyrolactone
  • Methyl furoate

Esters are associated with:

  • Plant growth stimulation
  • Aroma compounds
  • Catalytic biological responses

Wood Vinegar for Plants

Wood vinegar is a biologically active plant biostimulant and soil enhancer derived from natural biomass pyrolysis. Backed by decades of agricultural research, it has been shown to stimulate plant growth, enhance nutrient uptake, and suppress plant pathogens.

Plant Growth Stimulation

Studies report increased:

  • Chlorophyll content
  • Root development
  • Fruit number and weight
  • Total biomass
  • Sugar content in fruits

Wood vinegar contains organic acids and esters that act as growth catalysts and enhance photosynthetic efficiency

Applications have demonstrated yield improvements in a wide variety of plants like:

  • Rice
  • Tomato
  • Sweet potato
  • Soybean
  • Lettuce
  • Cucumber

Soil Improvement

The organic acids in wood vinegar can:

  • Increase phosphorus solubility
  • Improve microbial balance
  • Enhance rhizosphere activity
  • Accelerate composting

It serves as a natural alternative to excessive synthetic fertilizer use

Natural Biopesticide & Bioherbicide

Due to high phenolic content, wood vinegar shows:

  • Antifungal activity
  • Antibacterial effects
  • Insect mortality above 90% in certain trials
  • Weed suppression via acetic acid fraction

It can also enhance the effectiveness of certain agrochemicals when used at appropriate pH levels

Important: Low concentrations stimulate growth; excessive concentrations may cause phytotoxicity. Proper dilution and field testing are essential.

Wood Vinegar in Animal Production Systems

Wood vinegar is gaining attention as a natural antimicrobial and performance-enhancing supplement in animal husbandry.

Antimicrobial Activity

The phenolic and organic acid fractions exhibit inhibitory effects against:

  • Bacterial pathogens
  • Fungal organisms
  • Certain parasites

These properties make wood vinegar relevant for:

  • Litter treatment
  • Housing sanitation
  • Waterline sanitation

Gut Health & Feed Efficiency

Research trials indicate improvements in:

  • Feed conversion ratio
  • Weight gain
  • Egg production
  • Intestinal villi development
  • Microbial balance

    The acidic profile may support:

    • Suppression of harmful gut bacteria
    • Enhancement of beneficial microbial populations
    • Improved mineral absorption

    Odor Reduction & Environmental Management

Organic acids and phenolics can reduce:

    • Ammonia formation
    • Manure odor
    • Microbial fermentation imbalances

    Practical Positioning

Wood vinegar should be positioned as:

    • A complementary natural additive
    • A biosecurity enhancement tool
    • A potential antimicrobial alternative under proper validation

It is not a universal antibiotic replacement. Efficacy depends on concentration, source, and species.

    Animal Feed Applications

    Enhancing Livestock Productivity

While primarily known for plant use, wood vinegar is also a valuable additive for animal husbandry.  The benefits of wood vinegar has been thoroughly researched, with a compendium of research results available at www.pyroligneousacid.com.au

    Key Applications:

    • Odor Control: It is highly effective at reducing the odor of agricultural products and livestock facilities.
    • Disease Prevention: Its antimicrobial properties help in maintaining a healthy environment for livestock, potentially reducing the reliance on traditional chemicals.
    • Feed Efficiency: By improving the overall health and environmental conditions of the animals, wood vinegar can contribute to better growth outcomes.
